How To Stand Out to College Professor In Zoom or In-Person Lectures

briannacisaacsenga

Hello guys! I hope all is well, with you and your loved ones! It's Brianna, back at it again with another blog post! School is right around the corner and I am making this blog post to give you points on how to stand out to your Professor or teacher, whether class this year for you is on Zoom or In-Person. Standing out to your teacher is beneficial to you because you can network with them, they are more willing to take there own time out to help you when you do need it, you can ask them for a letter of recommendation when applying to things and so much more.

Here Are Some Ways To Stand Out:

Attend Class on Time:

You have probably heard this all before from multiple people. But teachers and Professors take attendance in class and take very close notice to when you are late, and take that into consideration for when you ask for help, and when they are grading. In addition to being late it creates a bad first impression on you, which the teacher will start to take in account.

Attend Office Hours:

Attending a professors Office Hours or trying to make a time to meet with the Professor shows or tells the Professors a lot about you. It shows that you are trying to make an effort in there class and that you really care about it, which creates a good impression. Not saying that you have to attend every Professors Office Hours, but meet with them and chat with them about the class subject or how you can do better in the class. ( There is always room for improvement!) They would really appreciate that!

Complete Your Assignments on Time/Getting Good Grades:

Completing your assignments on time, will also stand out to the Professor as well. They will believe that you are really diligent, responsible, and care a lot about the class. Professors keep track and know who is at the top of the class and who isn't, and the people who are at the top of the class are more likely to get a good letter of recommendation from the teacher versus someone who is at the bottom. But if you are ever at the bottom of a class and are struggling that is a good time to start reaching out to the Professor by: attending the Professors Office Hours, emailing them ( their email address located in the syllabus), or attend tutoring sessions or talking to the TA (teachers assistant).

Participate in Class:

Participate in class especially when no one else is participate stands out to the Professor as well. It shows that you are not just siting there and taking all the information but you are trying to what the Professor is saying or the simple explanation: paying attention. The Professor will appreciate that because no one wants to feel like they are talking to an empty crowd or a screen. But when participating keep this rule in mind: Step Up, Step Back. This rule that is used commonly in academic conversations. Step Up means if you haven't been contributing much to the conversation, you Step Up and try to start contributing. Step Back means that if you know that you have been contributing a lot to the conservation and others haven't you might want to Step Back from the conservation to allow others to Step Up to the conversation.
